Supporting Family Choice Education Print E-mail

Our Mission: Columbia Virtual Academy (CVA) supports family choice education through the values of personalization, flexibility, choice, and control.

CVA offers a highly flexible and personalized program to meet diverse family learning needs. A parent or high school student with parental guidance can take more or less control of the curriculum through various curricular options including online courses or more traditional book learning. Our intent is to listen to your needs and to design a program to match them.

Any student in Washington may enroll in CVA tuition-free. Your student does not need to be in a partnering district to enroll. Students enrolled in private education or independent home-based education within Washington may also enroll tuition-free on a part-time basis by arrangement, or access courses by paying tuition.

CVA is the child of a tremendously successful HOME school program developed by the Valley School District in 2003. The HOME program is embraced by home-schoolers because it is founded by home-schooling families and several of our staff members home-school their own children. They understand the unique opportunities that home-schooling offers for their families along with how the HOME program supports family structure and values. To this end, CVA follows a continuous model of improvement for all course offerings.

Watershed stewardship program inspires CVA student PDF Print E-mail

The Friends of the Cedar River Watershed formed in 1996 to help raise funds to build a $7 million education center on the Cedar River, which provides clean drinking water to nearly one million Seattle and King County residents, and habitat for several endangered and threatened species such as the wild Chinook salmon.

Since then, the Friends have developed three main programs to inspire protection and conservation of a healthy Cedar River Watershed: volunteer habitat restoration; the Cedar River Salmon Journey free public education events; and the Cedar River Watershed Report for high schoolers. The group’s big emphasis on youth has inspired many of the younger generation to get involved in watershed stewardship projects. One such youth is nine-year-old CVA student Carson McGlothlen. Here’s an excerpt from the Friends’ publication, Habitat Restoration Spotlight:

Presentations on CVA’s Calvert Partners Program PDF Print E-mail

Students in grades K-8 have an exciting new program available to them through CVA, called the Calvert Partners Program, just launched this year.

"We are deepening our partnership with Calvert and are excited to offer all the bells and whistles this world-class, 100-year-old, time-tested, homeschool curriculum provides," said CVA Director Lori Larsen. "Calvert integrates an online component with a text-based approach to provide a complete curriculum that is well-suited to both brand new homeschoolers, as well as homeschooling veterans."

Presentations on the new program offering begin with the evening program after the Face to Face event in Yakima, April 23rd, and will run to the end of July. Informational webinars are also planned.

"I love having a complete curriculum where the planning is done, so I can just teach." Larsen said. "I have been teaching my kids at home for six years and started with the Calvert program this year - this is our best year of homeschooling so far."

The program is open to new and returning CVA families.
