Family choice for a child's education must be supported. |
|
|
Columbia Virtual Academy (CVA) offers a highly flexible and personalized program to meet diverse family learning needs. A parent or high school student with parental guidance can take more or less control of the curriculum through various curricular options including online courses or more traditional book learning. Our intent is to listen to your needs and to design a program to match them.
Any student in Washington may enroll in CVA tuition-free. Your student does not need to be in a partnering district to enroll. Students enrolled in private education or independent home-based education within Washington may also enroll tuition-free on a part-time basis by arrangement, or access courses by paying tuition.
CVA is the child of a tremendously successful HOME school program developed by the Valley School District in 2003. The HOME program is embraced by home-schoolers because it is founded by home-schooling families and several of our staff members home-school their own children. They understand the unique opportunities that home-schooling offers for their families along with how the HOME program supports family structure and values. To this end, CVA follows a continuous model of improvement for all course offerings.

The success of ‘Family Choice Education’ |

We continue to see Columbia Virtual Academy’s principle of Family Choice Education succeed in attracting record numbers of enrolling families. Enrollment at the beginning of last school year was 845 students. To begin the 2008-2009 school year, CVA will have 1,669 enrollments.
This success is due in large measure to the truth of the principle of subsidiarity. Simply defined, this principle, present in the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, as well as the newly formed European Union, states that a central authority should have only a subsidiary function, performing those tasks that cannot be performed as well or better at a more immediate or local level. Family choice education follows this principle by honoring parental choices regarding the education of their children to the greatest extent possible under current law.

Preferred Curriculum Providers: GSN and Calvert |
|
|

Columbia Virtual Academy recommends both Global Student Network (GSN) and Calvert as preferred full service curriculum providers. The curricula provided through GSN and Calvert came to CVA?s attention through recommendations by homeschoolers several years ago. These two very different choices have proven their quality and success over time.
GSN features fully online courses for grades 2 through 12. Courses can be accessed from anywhere families can connect to the internet. The structure helps keep homeschooling organized with fully automated records just a click away.
Calvert has provided top notch curriculum to homeschooling families for over 100 years. Consequently, the structure and quality of this option has been fine tuned to meet homeschooling needs for over a century. CVA drop-ships Calvert materials directly to your home. The online tracking tool and Advisory Teaching Service (ATS) enhances the homeschooling experience with quality, service, and user-friendly cumulative records.

The Enrollment Department at Columbia Virtual Academy has had one busy summer.
This spring we had the opportunity to speak with numerous prospective families across the state. Hundreds of people inquired about the educational opportunities CVA provides. Jennifer Payton and I have spent countless hours on the phone answering questions, conducting informational conference calls and adding families to our enrollment list. As a result of those calls, we’re facing the largest enrollment in our program’s history.
We kicked off the "enrollment season" in mid-May when we began re-enrollment paperwork with our current CVA families. More than 840 students re-enrolled for the 2008-2009 school year, which is about 80% of our current students. During the month of June, our office processed the bulk of that paperwork, and began new student enrollment the end of June.

How much have you heard of the Digital Learning Commons? As your children grow and face new challenges, you want to be able to encourage them in whatever path they pursue. The Digital Learning Commons (DLC) gives you resources that can help your children succeed - from homework to college and career planning.
'...resources available to you at no charge...'
Columbia Virtual Academy is an active member with DLC and most of these resources are available to you at no charge to your family allocation. We would invite you to check out their home web page at www.learningcommons.org. After that, check out the resources available through the “Students,” the “Educators” and the “Parents” portals. Many of these provide excellent support for Global Student Network (GSN) and Calvert courses.
