What grade levels are covered by your program?
Columbia Virtual Academy (CVA) serves students in Kindergarten through 12th grade with a variety of program and curriculum options. Courses may be taken online, be parent-taught with the assistance of our Washington State Certified Teachers using curriculum chosen by the parent, or any combination of courses in between. We tailor the program to fit your family’s learning needs and philosophical approach to education.
Can my high school student earn credits?
CVA students have the ability to earn credits and receive a diploma, provided they meet all Washington State Graduation Requirements. The enrolling CVA member district issues the diploma consistent with CVA policies.
How does the CVA curriculum align to state standards and the WASL?
All CVA curriculum – online and “home supervised” – is closely aligned to state and federal standards. We have found that students in CVA do just as well or better than their counterparts in a traditional education setting on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) and the Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement (KTEA). We attribute this success to increased parental involvement, personalized learning approaches, close teacher contact and quality curricula.
I’ve heard that CVA is better than free – how is that possible?
Parents and CVA students not only have access to certified teachers and a wide selection of curriculum and online courses, they also have access to a student fund that is intended to help the student acquire materials or experiences that round out his or her education.
When can I enroll and how long until we can get started?
We are enrolling students now. After the required enrollment paperwork is complete, we usually have a student up and running with online courses within 48 hours.
Do I have to enroll my child as a Washington state public school student?
No. Students living outside of Washington State, enrolled in a private school, or who want to retain their “home–based instruction” status can access CVA programs through our tuition program.
Do I have to acquire textbooks? What about a computer?
For virtual learning students, all course work and materials (with a few exceptions) are provided online. A computer and an Internet connection are required. For those who need one, a computer can be provided upon family request; however, we do ask those who already have a computer to yield in order to help us help those who need it the most. For families who want a more traditional home-schooling model, a great variety of texts and materials commonly used by other home-schooling families have been approved and are available. Contact us for the list. If you don’t see the publisher or text you want to use, let us know! Our instructional materials committee is active in looking over popular texts. CVA strives to provide the student with everything he or she needs to be successful.
